March 18, 2021 / Letter #282 |
This week again, still on the excellent advice of Paul, my favourite informer, I focused on men’s fashion and dropped by Husbands, 57 rue de Richelieu. A Mecca for suits, tailored or even adapted from existing models. The quality of the cuts and fabrics is sublime, almost “haute couture”. I also made a little detour to The Vintage (looks like a subject I hold dear at the moment!), a hot spot for 501 jeans (though very confidential) which, as it happens, is not exclusively for men.

At Husbands, Nicolas Gabard and his charming young team welcome you in an ultra-refined men’s wardrobe. Ready-to-wear and personalised orders are all made in beautiful fabrics. Designed to last, suits are sober and timeless with simple or double-breasted jackets in classic, yet slightly modernised cuts. I took some pictures of the models that I like (with close-ups on the fabrics because my camera has the nasty habit to modify the original colours!), but you can go there with your eyes closed, all the models are ultra chic.

This 3-piece tennis striped suit in the spirit of ‘Once upon a time in America’ is also very elegant! Made of Spanish wool flannel and fully canvased in Naples…

Next winter, I wouldn’t mind wearing this magnificent camel English wool twill double-breasted coat, with a very elegant martingale on the back. Has anyone said it was only for men?
Perfection from the front view… |
and from behind! |
And other models |

What I like most about Husbands is their choice of fabrics. They have whole bundles of English fabric swatches with beautiful twills, flannels and (tartan) tweeds each more beautiful than the next. If you are tempted by made to measure suits, you will not know where to start… And for your greatest pleasure, after 6 weeks, you will have your suit made in a workshop near Naples delivered at home and you will be forever chic!
Tweeds aplenty |
Lovely blue & brown tweed |
Green with envy ! |

Then, of course, there are also shirts with all kinds of collars, sweaters (I particularly like this red sailor sweater), scarves and very funny shoes. Some models have a little heel, which can be convenient if by chance your sweetheart is taller than you… Yes, it does happen!
Collar or collar ? |
Denim shirts too ! |
Red sailor |
Scottish tartans of course |
Handmade in Italy |

Radical change of mood at The Vintage … you will notice it as soon as you see the window at 25 boulevard du Temple! It’s a tiny little boutique bursting with 501 jeans. Some are vintage, others new but not sold at Levi’s today. Whole stocks of models from the 80’s and 90’s stacked in a somewhat haphazard fashion. Fortunately, Philippe is there to advise you and especially to find the pair you are looking for in the right colour and the right size. In short, a must-see place to find the Levi’s of your dreams. And then, good news: the more you buy, the cheaper it is, 1 pair: € 50, 2 pairs: € 90, 3 pairs: € 120, it is actually displayed in huge numbers on the shop front. There’s also an impressive collection of work clothes just the way we like it: jackets, pants, jumpsuits, overalls in lots of colours and 100% cotton for purists !
Right there ! |
Very, very wide choice ! |
The real thing ! |
Shades of blue |
Jackets & coveralls |
Irresistible red overalls |
Next week, I will tell you about my girlfriend Diane Ducasse who moved to Monoprix, about my new shoes and I will hand with great pomp … the very famous price of the packaging! I wish you a very good week and I look forward to seeing you next Thursday !
