April 15, 2021 / Letter #286 |
As I write this letter, we are encouraged to stay at home as much as possible, so here are two series I urge you to watch, a way to enjoy the excellent cuisine of a closed restaurant, and something to keep you busy with DIY, reading or shopping on the internet.

It’s been a long time since I’ve told you about a movie or a series, of course, I’ve seen a lot of them, but nothing I’ve been so excited about to try and convince you to watch. However, I just finished After Life, a miniseries written, directed and performed by Ricky Gervais, and I absolutely loved it! It’s about a journalist in a small town who has lost his wife and is so miserable that he is being horrible to everyone. Well, when you put it that way I guess you might not be dying to watch it, but it is funny, moving and touching. Ricky Gervais is a great actor and the whole cast is altogether perfect. Some of the scenes are hilarious, like this report on a woman who makes puddings with her breast milk … well I won’t tell you more, just trust me !

Often when a series ends, you just can’t wait for a new season. This was the case for me with After Life and as a new season won’t come out until the summer of 2021, I looked up for another series with Ricky
Gervais and discovered Derek (released 2015!) The pitch is a small rest home with one of the employees who seems to be a bit deficient. Ah… I can imagine your face, you’re probably thinking: "That’s it, Ines is at the end of her rope! "but here again, it’s full of tenderness, funny, sarcastic, moving. This Ricky Gervais has a knack for making everyone endearing, highlights kindness, humans of all kinds, animals and makes what might seem like a grim world exciting. So I’m definitely a fan!

No doubt, we are sorely in need of restaurants! Yet meanwhile, we can bring them to our home. Septime, a restaurant on the rue de Charonne that I am very fond of, offers Septime à la
Maison. It’s very simple, you just have to go on their website and choose among the menus. You order at least the day before and then, either you pick it up, or have it delivered to your door. Of course, it does not replace a nice dinner with friends in a warm restaurant, but it’s still quite nice, though.

Let’s take the opportunity to do some manual work… I had some ceramic plates, but they were a bit rough and not very pleasant to use. And no domestic quarrel lately that would have removed them permanently, so I found a food safe and waterproof varnish that leaves a soft, protective film. Now I feel like I have some new dishes! This glassifying varnish is called Cleopatra and despite this magnificent name, it does not bother the nose since it does not smell too strong (nose – Cleopatra – joke…). Then I thought that I could have pasted pictures, written names, made drawings on the plates and varnished all that. Well, it’s already quite something that I rolled up my sleeves (hmm … a French way of saying keep it up!)

I never thought that one day I would look at a wine book with such interest and pleasure! The Almanach Château Lafite is magnificent. It tells the story of the 150 years the Rothschild family has spent at Château Lafite. Historical archives, but also archives of everyday life with anecdotes, iconographic documents, photos by Avedon, Roversi… The layout is magnificent, the photos of the documents are original, funny and often poetic. Saskia de Rothschild’s whole work is remarkable and if you don’t keep this book to yourself, it will undoubtedly make a wonderful gift.

Sometimes you find something vintage, but it’s not quite the right size or it can be a bit grungy. Uniqlo found a solution: very successful reissues in tribute to famous record stores. As you can see, I’m not just talking about my collaboration with them !

For next week, I’m preparing some looks I’ve imagined by picking up clothes that I already have in my wardrobe. The idea is not to buy new things but to try and combine what you already have. I wish you a nice week and look forward to seeing you next Thursday.
